The Garden Within
The Garden Within began with the final words of Voltaire’s Candide: Il faut cultiver notre jardin—“We must cultivate our garden.” After a long journey through optimism, suffering, argument and disillusionment, Voltaire returns to something immediate and practical: the life directly before us and the work that is ours to do.
The album also draws upon a central teaching of Abraham Hicks: that we need not allow “what is”—the conditions, conflicts and problems presently surrounding us—to determine the entirety of our attention. We can acknowledge the world without continually reproducing its turmoil within ourselves. By turning toward the reality we wish to experience and contribute to, we begin cultivating a different inner environment from which different possibilities can emerge.
The garden becomes a metaphor for that interior landscape. Every thought we revisit, every belief we reinforce and every object of attention we continually water becomes part of the world growing within us. We may not control the larger world or prevent its turbulence, but we can decide what receives our energy. This is not denial. It is a conscious refusal to allow external circumstances to occupy the whole field of consciousness.
Across four songs, the album moves from observation to participation. “The World at the Window” considers the difference between witnessing the world and inviting all of its unrest into ourselves. “What We Choose to Water” explores attention as a creative force: what we nourish grows, whether it is fear or possibility, resentment or peace. “Cultivate Our Garden” brings the album’s English reflections into dialogue with Voltaire’s original French phrase, allowing the two languages and voices to answer one another. The final track, “The Garden Within,” gathers these ideas into the recognition that the inner life is not separate from the world—it is one of the places from which the world is continually remade.
Cultivation is neither withdrawal nor passivity. A garden requires discernment, patience, repetition and care. The same is true of consciousness. Composition, contemplation, time in nature, thoughtful inquiry and deliberate changes in behavior may appear quieter than the forces competing for our attention, yet they can gradually loosen inherited patterns and establish a different way of living.
The garden within is therefore not a private refuge with its gates closed. What is cultivated inwardly eventually moves outward through our choices, relationships and creations. Peace becomes presence. Attention becomes beauty. Creativity becomes an offering.
The Garden Within is an invitation to tend that living ground—to choose carefully what we water and to remember that even in a turbulent world, something luminous can still be cultivated.

The World at the Window
The album opens with a consciousness confronted by everything it can see but cannot carry. The window represents awareness: it allows the world’s wonder and suffering to enter, yet it also marks the boundary between witnessing and being consumed. The song does not advocate closing the curtain. Instead, it asks whether compassion requires one heart to absorb every distant conflict, fear and sorrow that reaches it.
Felt piano, lyrical cello and restrained atmospheric textures create an unsettled interior space around the female lead. As warm bass and delicate percussion gradually enter, the arrangement begins searching for ground without fully finding it. The distant wordless harmonies suggest an answer that has not yet entered language. The song ends beneath the noise, where something quiet is waiting to be recognized.
Lyrics
[Intro]
[Female]
Ooh…
Ah…
[Verse 1]
[Female]
Morning gathers at the window
With a thousand distant cries.
Every sorrow asks an answer;
Every fear demands my eyes.
[Female]
I have tried to hold the horizon
Like a burden in my hands,
But the farther that I reach for it,
The less I know where I stand.
[Pre-Chorus]
[Female]
There are fires beyond the mountain.
There are storms across the sea.
Must I carry every breaking
Just because it reaches me?
[Chorus]
[Female]
The world is waiting at the window,
Calling every heart by name,
Laying all its grief before me,
Asking me to bear its weight.
[Female]
I will not turn away from sorrow.
I will not say I did not see.
But how much of the whole world
Can one heart carry faithfully?
[Verse 2]
[Female]
I mistook my endless watching
For a kindness I could give,
As if naming every darkness
Might instruct the light to live.
[Female]
I let every voice move through me
Till my own grew faint and small,
And I wondered if compassion
Means I must contain it all.
[Pre-Chorus]
[Female]
If I drown beside the drowning,
Have I brought them to the shore?
If I lose the ground beneath me,
Can my hands still offer more?
[Chorus]
[Female]
The world is waiting at the window,
Calling every heart by name,
Laying all its grief before me,
Asking me to bear its weight.
[Female]
I will not turn away from sorrow.
I will not say I did not see.
But how much of the whole world
Can one heart carry faithfully?
[Bridge]
[Female]
If I turn toward the silence,
Am I turning from their pain?
If I guard a single candle,
Does the darkness somehow gain?
[Female]
Or perhaps the heart needs shelter,
Not to hide, but to renew.
Perhaps the light I tend within me
Is the light I carry through.
[Final Chorus]
[Female]
The world still waits here at the window
With its wonder and its grief.
I will not close myself against it,
Nor surrender all my peace.
[Female]
Somewhere underneath the clamor
There is ground I have not seen.
I do not know what waits beneath me—
Only something calls to me.
[Outro]
[Female]
The world at the window.
The ground beneath my feet.
Ooh…
Something calls to me.
What We Choose to Water
The second song discovers that attention is not simply observation; it is nourishment. Thoughts, memories and expectations become seeds, while repeated attention becomes the water that helps them grow. The song distinguishes conscious cultivation from denial: the thistle must still be seen, and difficult truths must still be met, but they need not receive every available resource of the mind.
A subtle downtempo pulse moves the album forward. Syncopated pizzicato cello, felt piano, warm fretless bass and brushed percussion create a fluid chamber-soul setting for the returning female voice. The music has greater rhythmic momentum than the opening track, reflecting the movement from helpless observation toward deliberate choice. “What we water learns to grow” becomes both the melodic hook and the album’s first practical principle.
Lyrics
[Intro]
[Female]
Ooh…
[Verse 1]
[Female]
Every morning leaves its seeds
Across the open ground:
A word of hope, a voice of fear,
A sorrow handed down.
[Female]
I cannot choose each wind that enters
Or each shadow passing through,
But I can choose which roots I strengthen
With the water I can use.
[Pre-Chorus]
[Female]
Attention is a quiet river,
Flowing where I let it go.
The earth remembers every current.
What we water learns to grow.
[Chorus]
[Female]
What we water learns to grow.
What we nourish finds the sun.
Every day becomes a garden
Through the tending we have done.
[Female]
I will not deny the thistle.
I will meet what must be known.
But I will give my deepest water
To the life I choose to grow.
[Verse 2]
[Female]
I have watered old conclusions
Just by speaking them again,
Given yesterday new branches
Till they covered where I stand.
[Female]
Now I listen for the difference
Between warning and old fear,
Between a truth that asks for action
And a voice I need not hear.
[Pre-Chorus]
[Female]
Attention is a quiet river,
Not a chain around the mind.
I can choose where it will gather.
I can leave old ground behind.
[Chorus]
[Female]
What we water learns to grow.
What we nourish finds the sun.
Every day becomes a garden
Through the tending we have done.
[Female]
I will not deny the thistle.
I will meet what must be known.
But I will give my deepest water
To the life I choose to grow.
[Bridge]
[Female]
This is not a wall of flowers
Built to hide the wounded land.
A garden asks for honest seeing,
Patient heart and willing hands.
[Female]
I can pull what chokes the living.
I can grieve what could not stay.
Then return the water gently
To what reaches for the day.
[Final Chorus]
[Female]
What we water learns to grow.
What we nourish finds the sun.
Every day becomes a garden
Through the tending we have done.
[Female]
We will not deny the thistle.
We will meet what must be known.
But we will give our deepest water
To the life we choose to grow.
[Outro]
[Female]
What we water…
Learns to grow.
What we nourish…
Finds the sun.
Now I know
Where the water goes.
Cultivate Our Garden
At the center of the album stands Voltaire’s final insight from Candide: Il faut cultiver notre jardin—“We must cultivate our garden.” The song accepts that not every question can be solved through argument and not every sorrow can be given a satisfying explanation. Some truths are discovered through doing: clearing stones, choosing seeds, returning after the rain and giving our labor to the ground within reach.
The established female lead sings the English declaration, while a male tenor answers only in French. The contrast makes the refrain sound like a conversation across centuries—one voice discovering the idea in the present, the others returning it in its original language. Flowing rhythm, piano, cello, fretless bass and sparse nylon-string guitar support the exchange, while the muted trumpet provides the song’s defining instrumental color. Its lyrical solo expands the space between contemplation and action without disturbing the song’s intimacy.
The garden described here is not a fortress or a means of hiding from pain. Its roots survive storms, its flowers rise after rain, and everything cultivated within it eventually reaches beyond its original boundaries. The song transforms Voltaire’s sentence from an intellectual conclusion into a living commitment.
Lyrics
[Verse 1]
[Female]
I went searching for an answer
Large enough to hold the earth,
For a pattern in each sorrow,
For the measure of its worth.
[Female]
But the field beside my doorway
Waited without asking why,
Holding seeds beneath the silence,
Keeping faith beneath the sky.
[Pre-Chorus]
[Female]
Not every question opens
When the mind demands a key.
Some truths wait inside the doing,
In the work in front of me.
[Chorus]
[Female]
We must cultivate our garden.
[Male]
Il faut cultiver notre jardin.
[Female]
Take the ground that lies before us;
Give our labor to the day.
[Female]
We must cultivate our garden.
[Male]
Il faut cultiver notre jardin.
[Female]
Not to hide from what is broken,
But to grow another way.
[Verse 2]
[Female]
I will clear the stones of anger,
Prune the branches of regret.
I will leave a place for wonder
Where the morning gathers yet.
[Female]
I will not postpone the planting
For a spring I cannot know.
I will tend the living promise
I have strength enough to grow.
[Pre-Chorus]
[Female]
A garden is not made by wishing,
Nor by arguing with rain.
It is shaped by patient choosing,
By returning once again.
[Chorus]
[Female]
We must cultivate our garden.
[Male]
Il faut cultiver notre jardin.
[Female]
Take the ground that lies before us;
Give our labor to the day.
[Female]
We must cultivate our garden.
[Male]
Il faut cultiver notre jardin.
[Female]
Not to hide from what is broken,
But to grow another way.
[Bridge]
[Female]
This garden is no fortress,
No hiding place from pain.
Its roots hold fast beneath the storm;
Its flowers rise after rain.
[Female]
Every kindness grown in silence,
Every beauty we restore,
Leaves the place where it was planted
And becomes a little more.
[Final Chorus]
[Female]
We must cultivate our garden.
[Male]
Il faut cultiver notre jardin.
[Female]
Turn the earth and choose the seed now;
Give our labor to the day.
[Female]
We must cultivate our garden.
[Male]
Il faut cultiver notre jardin.
[Female]
Not to hide from what is broken,
But to grow another way.
[Outro]
[Female]
We must cultivate our garden.
[Male]
Il faut cultiver notre jardin.
The Garden Within
The final song reveals that inward cultivation was never solely private. A tree cannot know who will rest beneath its shade, a flower cannot reserve its fragrance for the hands that gave it rain, and a song cannot know the listener who may need it years after it was created. What begins in solitude eventually enters the world through presence, conduct and creation.
The female voice carries the album’s final realization over felt piano, expressive cello, warm bass and an expanding chamber arrangement. Muted trumpet returns as a connective thread, while the strings gradually open the music into its broadest emotional space. The movement is luminous but restrained: the garden expands without becoming a proclamation.
Images from the preceding songs return in the closing lines. The window remains open, the river finds the seed, and the garden continues growing through every life it nourishes. The album ends with its central recognition: the garden within was never mine alone.
Lyrics
[Verse 1]
[Female]
At first I thought the garden
Was a shelter of my own,
A quiet place behind the noise
Where I could stand alone.
[Female]
But the branches crossed the boundary,
And their shadows touched the street.
Every blossom gave its fragrance
To whoever it might meet.
[Pre-Chorus]
[Female]
Nothing living keeps its beauty
Sealed inside the place it grew.
What is tended in the silence
Finds a way of passing through.
[Chorus]
[Female]
The garden within
Was never mine alone.
Every root I strengthened quietly
Became a branch beyond my home.
[Female]
Every peace I learned in silence
Changed the way I met the world.
What I give begins by growing
In the garden within.
[Verse 2]
[Female]
A tree does not name the traveler
Who will rest beneath its shade.
A flower does not keep its fragrance
For the hands that gave it rain.
[Female]
A song cannot know the listener
Who may need it years from now.
It simply leaves the heart that shaped it
And finds another place to grow.
[Pre-Chorus]
[Female]
What begins as inward tending
Does not end where it began.
Love becomes a way of moving
From the heart into the hand.
[Chorus]
[Female]
The garden within
Was never mine alone.
Every root I strengthened quietly
Became a branch beyond my home.
[Female]
Every peace I learned in silence
Changed the way I met the world.
What I give begins by growing
In the garden within.
[Bridge]
[Female]
I cannot answer every sorrow.
I cannot mend the world alone.
But I can bring a clearer presence
Into every place I go.
[Female]
Every choice becomes a climate.
Every word, a little rain.
What I cultivate within me
Enters life through me again.
[Final Chorus]
[Female]
The garden within
Was never ours alone.
Every root we strengthen quietly
Becomes a branch beyond our home.
[Female]
Every peace we learn in silence
Changes how we meet the world.
What we give begins by growing
In the garden within.
[Refrain]
[Female]
What we give begins by growing.
What we cherish finds the light.
What we tend within the silence
Walks beside us into life.
[Outro]
[Female]
The window remains open.
The river finds the seed.
The garden keeps on growing
In every life it feeds.
[Female]
The garden within
Was never mine alone.
[Female]
Ooh…
Ah…
Bonus Track: Just for Today
“Just for Today” began with a message from my friend Pat after she heard “Cultivate Our Garden.” She recalled a creed centered on a series of simple intentions: to be happy, accept what is, improve the mind, care for one’s health, act with courage, take responsibility, resist discouraging thoughts, and extend kindness to those who cross our path.
Her reflection revealed a natural continuation of The Garden Within. The garden is not cultivated through one heroic transformation, but through the quiet choices made within a single day. We cannot answer for everything that may come, rescue every field, move every stone, persuade every voice, or prove every truth. We can, however, tend what has been placed within our care.
The song’s female lead carries this daily promise with warmth and intimacy, while an ensemble of women answers in French, honoring Pat’s deep affection for France, beauty and tradition. The trumpet becomes another voice within the garden—reflective, dignified and gently luminous—allowing the music to pause and breathe before returning to its central affirmation.
“Just for Today” is not a call to withdraw from the world. It is an invitation to meet the world through the part of life we can genuinely influence: the thought we choose, the kindness we offer, the responsibility we accept and the small patch of earth we are given to cultivate. Tomorrow will bring its own garden. For now, this day is enough.
Lyrics
Just for today, I will welcome the morning,
And meet what is here without asking for more.
I will not carry tomorrow’s unanswered questions
Or yesterday’s weight through an unopened door.
I will give my attention to what lies before me,
A body to cherish, a mind I can clear.
I will gather the courage to choose what is honest,
And answer this life with my presence here.
I do not need to finish
The road I cannot see.
One faithful day of tending
Is enough to ask of me.
Just for today, I will tend what is mine.
Rien que pour aujourd’hui,
Je cultiverai mon jardin.
Give water to kindness and room to the light.
I cannot promise the whole road ahead,
But just for today, I will choose what I plant.
Just for today, I will watch what I nourish,
The stories I repeat and the judgments I make.
I will not feed the thoughts that imprison my spirit
Or speak words that wound for resentment’s sake.
I will greet those who enter the path that I travel
With courtesy offered, not something they earn.
I will take my own part in the shape of the garden,
And change what I can through the lessons I learn.
The world may keep on turning
Beyond what I control.
But every seed of mercy
Can change the living whole.
Just for today, I will tend what is mine.
Rien que pour aujourd’hui,
Je cultiverai mon jardin.
Give water to kindness and room to the light.
I cannot answer for all that may come,
But just for today, I will choose what is right.
Not every field is mine to rescue.
Not every stone is mine to move.
Not every voice must be persuaded.
Not every truth is mine to prove.
But I can soften one hard answer.
I can make one burden light.
I can leave one place more peaceful
Than I found it in the night.
Just for today, I will tend what is mine.
Rien que pour aujourd’hui,
Je cultiverai mon jardin.
Give shelter to wonder and space to forgive.
I cannot cultivate every field,
But here in this garden, I can choose how I live.
Just for today, I will notice the beauty
That waits without asking for praise or belief:
The sun on the table, the breath in my body,
The green of a leaf and the mercy of sleep.
And when evening gathers the work of the daylight,
I will not count only what remains undone.
I will honor the seeds that were placed in the darkness
And trust what was tended beneath the warm sun.
Just for today, I will tend what is mine.
Rien que pour aujourd’hui,
Je cultiverai mon jardin.
Give water to kindness and room to the light.
I cannot promise the whole road ahead,
But just for today, I will choose what I plant.
And tomorrow, if morning should open before me,
I will meet it as something beginning again.
Chaque jour,
Je cultiverai mon jardin.
One day and one seed,
One kindness, one choice—
And the garden within me
Will answer the world.
Just for today.
Rien que pour aujourd’hui.
I will tend what is mine.
Je cultiverai mon jardin.
Just for today.
Rien que pour aujourd’hui.
Just for today.
