The 12 Treasures of Hawai’i
An Introduction
This album began as a gift, and a trust. It was written to accompany The 12 Treasures of Hawai’i, the bilingual picture book by Kumi Hatanaka — a story she made for three children she loves, and for every child who might one day read it. She asked me to give her book a second voice: to take a story meant to be seen and read, and let it also be heard. Fourteen songs were the answer — one for the beginning, one for each treasure, one for the farewell — so that the book and the music tell the same story, side by side, in the same order, at the same gentle pace.
The armature is a child’s journey along a Hawaiian shore. Three siblings — Tsubasa, Subaru, and Sara — and their little dog Mini set out one bright day, and a rainbow opens onto a gentle white unicorn who becomes their guide. Together they discover twelve treasures, one by one, and each treasure is a Hawaiian value — a small, beautiful way of living: joy, love, hospitality, teamwork, kindness, generosity, purity, diligence, patience, loyalty, humility, and the light of the heart. The album is built exactly on this sequence, so that its shape is the book’s shape: a prologue, twelve stations, and a finale that gathers them all.
The sound lives where two worlds meet — the islands of Hawai’i and the heart of Japan. Around a tender lead voice and a children’s choir, the music carries the warm colors of the islands: the lilt of the ʻukulele, the roll of slack-key guitar, the sparkle of glockenspiel and suzu. Woven through them are Japanese sounds — the koto, the taiko’s steady heartbeat, and the shakuhachi, which I gave to the unicorn, so that its voice speaks in that breath of bamboo each time it teaches a treasure. Gentle strings, soft piano, and harp keep everything unhurried, the way Kumi’s illustrations feel. The music is written for every age, but its heart is with children: fun, innocent, open-hearted — the kind of lightness a child delights in and a grown-up remembers.
Two languages, woven the way the book is written. The verses tell the story in Japanese — the children’s world, close and warm — and the choruses most often carry each treasure’s lesson in English, so the heart of the value rings out clearly, while the Hawaiian word itself (Aloha, Laulima, Ha’aha’a) returns like a refrain, tying song to meaning. The Japanese lyrics are kept in soft, mostly-hiragana script, so the words feel as young and gentle as the story does. Two of the songs — Ho’omanawanui (Patience) and Wie’o (Loyalty & Obedience) — are sung entirely in Japanese, the Hawaiian word woven in as a quiet touch: two small still moments near the heart of the album.
The journey. The album opens with a Prologue, The Rainbow Opens, where the unicorn appears and the adventure begins. From there it moves through the twelve treasures in the order the children find them — playful and bounding in Le’ale’a and Laulima, quiet and prayerful in Ho’omanawanui, Wie’o, and Ma’ema’e — until it reaches Ho’omana, the Light of the Heart: the still climax where the twelve treasures gather into a single glow, and the children discover that the light was inside them all along. It closes with a Finale, We’ll Meet Again, where the rainbow becomes the light of everyone’s hearts, the unicorn says its tender goodbye, and all twelve treasures are sung once more as one shining promise.
And for each language, a video album. Because the story is meant to be seen as well as heard, the whole soundtrack also exists as a video — the book’s pages and the song’s lyrics appearing on screen as the music plays — in an English edition and a Japanese edition. The music is the same; the pages and words simply arrive in the language you choose. Both are linked below.
The close. Kumi’s book ends with the truest words of all: that the greatest treasure is the one already inside us. This music only tried to help those words sing — and to bring Tsubasa, Subaru, Sara, and Mini a little closer, wherever they are heard. The rainbow opens; the treasures are found; and the finding, in the end, was always a coming-home.

The Rainbow Opens (はじまり · Prologue)
The album opens where the story does — a bright summer shore, the three children and little Mini at play, the sea keeping time with its zabūn, zabūn. Slack-key guitar and ʻukulele set the gentle 6/8 sway that will carry the whole album; then Sara points, a koto sweeps upward, and the rainbow arches open to reveal the white unicorn, who greets the children with a single word — Aloha. The first chorus states the album’s promise, storyteller and children’s choir together: twelve little treasures, and the greatest one already inside. This is the album’s main theme, the melody every treasure will remember.

Le’ale’a (楽しむ心 · Joyful Heart — the First Treasure)
The album’s dance. The unicorn leads the children to a hill of flowers and joy simply spills over — Sara spinning, Tsubasa tumbling down the slope, Subaru’s great wahaha! — each child given their own rhythm in the ʻukulele bounce. Hand-claps and a skipping groove carry the bilingual chorus, a call-and-response the smallest listener can chant. A giggle-break and a koto glissando lift the rainbow higher, and the unicorn leaves the lesson in a single line: a smile is the magic that brightens the heart.

Aloha (愛 · Love — the Second Treasure)
On the shore the children find a little honu — a sea turtle — struggling, and without hesitating they help it back to the water. The song is warm and unhurried, its chorus turning the most familiar Hawaiian word into its deepest meaning: Aloha is more than hello or goodbye — it is love, shown. As the honu swims free with a parting “Aloha,” the unicorn names the treasure: to love and cherish every living thing.

Ho’okipa (おもてなし · Hospitality — the Third Treasure)
Evening rain begins to fall, and the children find little birds caught in it — so they guide them to shelter under a great tree. The song is a cozy welcome, the chorus opening its arms: come in from the rain, you are welcome, you are home. When the rain clears and a rainbow returns, the unicorn names the treasure: to make a place where others can feel safe.

The children climb into a canoe, but the waves are big and no one can paddle it alone — not Tsubasa, not Subaru, not Sara. Only when they pull together does the canoe glide forward. A rowing-song with a real heave to it, dolphins leaping in the sparkling sea, and the unicorn’s lesson: what we can’t do alone, we can do together.

Each helps in their own way — Sara speaks softly, Subaru brings water, Tsubasa finds the “lost dog” poster — until the puppy’s face eases into calm. A tender song; the unicorn names the treasure: kindness is a gift that warms everyone’s heart.

Ma’ema’e (清らかさ · Cleanliness & Purity — the Seventh Treasure)
A cave along the way is dark and full of litter — so the children set to work, sweeping and wiping and polishing, little by little, until a sparkle begins to shine from deep inside. A gently building song; the unicorn’s lesson is quiet and true: the heart is the same — keep it clean, and the light within shines out.

Po’ohana (勤勉さ・努力 · Diligence & Effort — the Eighth Treasure)
The children learn to hula, and at first they can’t get it right — Tsubasa mixes up his feet, Sara falls, Subaru forgets the steps. But they practice a little every day, falling down and standing back up, until at last the three dance beautifully and a great flower blooms. The album’s “keep going” song; the unicorn’s lesson: effort, in time, makes a beautiful flower open.

Ho’omanawanui (待つ力 · Patience — the Ninth Treasure)
One of the album’s two all-Japanese songs — a quiet, night-time lullaby. On a still beach the children and Mini nestle together, waiting for the rainbow; it doesn’t come, and it doesn’t come. The unicorn’s gentle answer floats over shakuhachi: don’t rush — the most precious things take time. Then morning comes, and the sky fills with rainbow. The Hawaiian word is woven in as a soft refrain.

Wie’o (忠順・従順 · Loyalty & Obedience — the Tenth Treasure)
The album’s second all-Japanese song — the inward-listening one. A strong wind blows and everyone says “let’s go that way!” — but the three stop, place a hand on their chests, and listen to the small voice inside. Following it leads them to the treasure-gate. The unicorn reframes the word beautifully: Wie’o isn’t just obeying — it’s choosing, with love, the path that’s truly right.

Ha’aha’a (謙虚 · Humility — the Eleventh Treasure)
On the theme “everyone is different, everyone is wonderful.” Tsubasa climbs a high cliff with all his might and reaches the top — but instead of boasting, he turns and tells the others, “you’re amazing too.” A tender chorus built on the motto: don’t make yourself too tall, don’t make others small. The unicorn’s teaching: everyone is different, everyone precious, met with love.

Ho’omana (心の光 · Light of the Heart — the Twelfth Treasure)
The album’s quiet climax. On a starlit hill the unicorn asks the children to close their eyes — and a warm light kindles from within each of them. The twelve treasures they’ve gathered glow as one. The chorus arrives radiant and hushed at once: the light was there all along, deep inside the heart, and it has always shone. The unicorn’s final teaching: cherish it, and it shines brighter still.

The unicorn smiled: “Try closing your eyes.” Gently, the three closed their eyes. — Then, deep in their chests, a warm light softly kindles. “Wow!” — Sara’s eyes went wide. — The light of the twelve treasures they had found until now becomes one and shines. — “Ho‘omana, you see, in happy times and sad times is always there inside you all. When you cherish it, that light shines even brighter.”
We’ll Meet Again (フィナーレ · Finale)
A great rainbow fills the sky — made, the unicorn says, of the light of everyone’s hearts — and the three join hands and make a promise. The album’s anthem gathers the whole journey: a full chorus of the promise, then the twelve treasures called out one by one like a roll-call, and the unicorn’s tender farewell — “we’ll meet again” — as it returns beyond the rainbow. It closes on a quiet coda: the children and Mini looking up forever, and Aunty Kumi’s own closing words.
