Lanterns for Each Other — Children’s Choir Anthems for Dark Times (Vol. II) is the companion album to Light in Our Chest, written for the same treble-only world: children’s voices (SSA), English lyrics, spiritual without religion, and a deliberate refusal to use childhood as a horror device. If Album I is the moment the room goes dark and we learn to protect the small flame inside, Album II is what happens after: we step forward, still in uncertain light, and practice how to live well anyway.

Where Album I leans into endurance—holding steady, finding courage, surviving the night—Album II leans into craft. These tracks are about the daily disciplines that make hope real: beginning again without shame, making small good choices, repairing what breaks, protecting quiet, and becoming reliable to one another. The musical palette stays Phrygian/Locrian-capable, but it warms the midrange—strings in comfortable registers, occasional harp and piano glow, and less low-brass weight—so the darkness feels less like threat and more like depth.

You’ll also hear a clearer “series fingerprint” in Vol. II: echo and response as a form of community. Sometimes the choir answers a solo line, sometimes a single word returns like a promise, sometimes the chorus arrives in a round as if the group is teaching itself how to breathe together. Spoken moments appear only once or twice, kept rare so they feel intimate rather than theatrical. The result is not a soundtrack for fear, but a vocabulary for resilience—music that lets children sound like what they already are: a future speaking in the present.

Liner Notes

How to Begin Again

A gentle opening ritual: a warm Phrygian edge softened by strings and harp glow, where the choir turns “again” into a small, repeatable act of courage—less a restart than a return to steadiness.

Lyrics

(Verse 1)
New day arrives
No perfect start
Just open hands
And steady heart
We take one step
We take one breath
We are still here
We are still next

(Pre-Chorus)
Not fast
Not loud
Just true
Just clear

(Chorus)
We begin again
(choir echo, 1 bar later)
Again
We begin again
With gentle brave
We begin again
(choir echo, 1 bar later)
Again
We begin again
And we stay

(Verse 2)
If we fell back
We do not shame
We find our feet
We try the same
A softer start
A kinder way
We begin now
We begin today

(Pre-Chorus)
One breath
One step
One light
One name

(Chorus)
We begin again
(choir echo, 1 bar later)
Again
We begin again
With gentle brave
We begin again
(choir echo, 1 bar later)
Again
We begin again
And we stay

(Bridge)
Start with a breath
Start with the good
Start where you are
Start where you stood

(Final Chorus)
We begin again
(choir echo)
Again
We begin again
With gentle brave

Make a Small Good

Built on call-and-response, this track treats kindness like rhythm practice—one young lead voice prompting, the choir answering—until the groove itself becomes a blueprint for everyday decency.

Lyrics

(Verse 1)
[CHOIR]
A kind hello
A held door
A little help
A little more
A shared pencil
A saved seat
Small things
Make big feet

(Pre-Chorus — Call/Response)
[SOLO CHILD]
What can we do?
[CHOIR]
One small good.
[SOLO CHILD]
Start it now.
[CHOIR]
We could.

(Chorus)
[SOLO CHILD]
Make a small good
[CHOIR]
Make a small good
[SOLO CHILD]
Make it today
[CHOIR]
Make it today
[CHOIR]
One small good
Can change the day

(Verse 2)
[CHOIR]
A calm word
When voices rise
A second chance
No sharp replies
A little water
A little time
Small good
Turns the line

(Pre-Chorus — Call/Response)
[SOLO CHILD]
What can we do?
[CHOIR]
One small good.
[SOLO CHILD]
Start it now.
[CHOIR]
We could.

(Chorus)
[SOLO CHILD]
Make a small good
[CHOIR]
Make a small good
[SOLO CHILD]
Make it today
[CHOIR]
Make it today
[CHOIR]
One small good
Can change the day

(Bridge)
[CHOIR]
Small good
In the hallway
Small good
On the street
Small good
In the quiet
Small good
When we meet

(Final Chorus)
[SOLO CHILD]
Make a small good
[CHOIR]
Make it today
[CHOIR]
One small good
Can change the day

The Practice of Quiet

Part lullaby, part discipline, it frames silence as strength rather than absence; the echo of “quiet” lands like a breath returning, teaching the choir to hold calm in the middle of motion.

Lyrics

(Verse 1 — KIDS SPOKEN CHANT, unison)
Slow feet.
Soft eyes.
Low voice.
Clear mind.
We do not rush.
We do not race.
We make a calm
In time and place.

(Pre-Chorus — SUNG, very simple)
Breathe in
Hold
Let go
Now

(Chorus — SUNG)
Quiet is strength
(choir echo, 1 bar later)
Quiet
Quiet is strength
We learn and keep
Quiet is strength
Under our feet
Quiet is strength
And in our sleep

(Verse 2 — SUNG-CHANT, staccato, almost spoken but pitched)
When noise climbs up
We step back down
We find the ground
We feel the sound
Not empty
Not cold
Not weak
Quiet is where
The brave can speak

(Pre-Chorus — SUNG)
Breathe in
Hold
Let go
Now

(Chorus — SUNG)
Quiet is strength
(choir echo)
Quiet
Quiet is strength
We learn and keep
Quiet is strength
Under our feet
Quiet is strength
And in our sleep

(Bridge — SUNG)
One breath
One calm
One light
Here

(Final Chorus — SUNG)
Quiet is strength
(choir echo)
Quiet
Quiet is strength
We learn and keep

Bread for the Heart

A nourishing, mid-register warmth where Locrian/Phrygian color reads as depth, not danger; the music feels like gathering supplies for the soul—simple, steady, and quietly abundant.

Lyrics

(Verse 1)
We feed the day
With what we do
A little care
A little true
We grow what we give
We grow what we keep
We feed the heart
So it can sleep

(Pre-Chorus)
We feed the light
(choir echo, 1 bar later)
Feed the light
We feed the light
(choir echo)
Feed the light

(Chorus)
We feed the light
We want to keep
We feed the calm
We want to feel
We feed the brave
We want to be
We feed the heart
And it grows real

(Verse 2)
We feed with words
We feed with tone
We feed with how
We leave alone
We feed with patience
We feed with play
We feed the good
Into the day

(Pre-Chorus)
We feed the light
(choir echo)
Feed the light
We feed the light
(choir echo)
Feed the light

(Chorus)
We feed the light
We want to keep
We feed the calm
We want to feel
We feed the brave
We want to be
We feed the heart
And it grows real

(Bridge)
Not too much
Not too fast
Just enough
So it can last

(Final Chorus)
We feed the light
We want to keep
We feed the heart
So it can sleep

Repair Song

Antiphonal lines (A/B) make reconciliation sound tangible: apologies, listening, and second chances traded back and forth until “repair” becomes a shared melody rather than a private burden.

Lyrics

(Verse 1 — A/B)
Choir A:
I spoke too sharp
Choir B:
I pulled away
Choir A:
I made a mess
Choir B:
I lost the way
Choir A:
But I am here
Choir B:
And you are too
Both:
Repair is something
We can do

(Pre-Chorus — A/B)
Choir A:
I can say “sorry”
Choir B:
I can hear
Choir A:
I can slow down
Choir B:
I can be clear

(Chorus — FULL choir)
We can mend
What we have torn
We can start
A brand new morn
We can listen
We can learn
We can mend
We can return

(Verse 2 — A/B)
Choir A:
I can make space
Choir B:
I can be kind
Choir A:
I can fix it
Choir B:
In my mind
Choir A:
Not with magic
Choir B:
Not with pride
Both:
Just with truth
Side by side

(Pre-Chorus — A/B)
Choir A:
I can say “sorry”
Choir B:
I can hear
Choir A:
I can slow down
Choir B:
I can be clear

(Chorus — FULL choir)
We can mend
What we have torn
We can start
A brand new morn
We can listen
We can learn
We can mend
We can return

(Bridge — FULL choir)
Repair is brave
Repair is real
Repair is how
We learn to feel

(Final Chorus — FULL choir)
We can mend
What we have torn
We can mend
We can return

The Circle Holds

A communal anthem designed like a round—voices entering as if joining hands—so the choir embodies the message: stability is something we build together, phrase by phrase.

Lyrics

(Verse 1)
When days are loud
We make a ring
A place to rest
A place to sing
Not to hide
Not to fold
Just to remember
We can hold

(Pre-Chorus)
Hand to hand
Near to near

(Chorus — CANON on first line)
Group 1:
The circle holds
Group 2 (2 bars later):
The circle holds
Full choir:
When days are hard
The circle holds
A steady heart
The circle holds
We stay as one
The circle holds
Until it’s done

(Verse 2)
If one feels low
We do not turn
We bring them in
We help them learn
Not with force
Not with blame
Just with kindness
All the same

(Pre-Chorus)
Hand to hand
Near to near

(Chorus — CANON on first line)
Group 1:
The circle holds
Group 2:
The circle holds
Full choir:
When days are hard
The circle holds
A steady heart
The circle holds
We stay as one
The circle holds
Until it’s done

(Bridge)
Close your eyes
Feel the ground
In the circle
We are found

(Final Chorus)
The circle holds
When days are hard
We stay as one
We keep our heart

Wonder Is a Choice

A single child voice stands in the light while the ensemble mirrors key words back like gentle affirmation; wonder becomes a deliberate practice, not a mood, as warmth and clarity replace heaviness.

Lyrics

(Verse 1 — SOLO)
I see a leaf
Turn in the air
(choir echo)
In the air
I feel the sun
Even there
(choir echo)
Even there
The world is big
But so am I
(choir echo)
So am I
I keep my wonder
On purpose
(choir echo)
On purpose

(Pre-Chorus — SOLO + choir)
Solo:
Not because it’s easy
Choir (soft):
Easy
Solo:
Because it helps me see
Choir (soft):
See

(Chorus — FULL choir)
I keep my wonder
On purpose
I keep my wonder
On purpose
When days feel heavy
I choose to see
A little bright
In front of me

(Verse 2 — SOLO)
I hear a laugh
In a busy place
(choir echo)
Busy place
I find one star
Not in a race
(choir echo)
Not in a race
I do not wait
For perfect skies
(choir echo)
Perfect skies
I keep my wonder
With open eyes
(choir echo)
Open eyes

(Pre-Chorus — SOLO + choir)
Solo:
Not to pretend
Choir (soft):
Pretend
Solo:
To stay alive
Choir (soft):
Alive

(Chorus — FULL choir)
I keep my wonder
On purpose
I keep my wonder
On purpose
When days feel heavy
I choose to see
A little bright
In front of me

(Bridge — SOLO)
Look—right here.
(choir echo)
Right here.

(Final Chorus — FULL choir)
I keep my wonder
On purpose
A little bright
In front of me

Lanterns for Each Other (Covenant)

The closing vow of Vol. II—less about surviving darkness, more about becoming reliable within it—where the echo of “for each other” turns into a promise the choir keeps long after the final chord.

Lyrics

(Opening — SPOKEN, full choir)
We are here.

(Verse 1 — SUNG)
If your light is low
I’ll bring mine near
If your steps feel small
I will stay here
Not to fix you
Not to push
Just to be with you
In the hush

(Pre-Chorus)
Hand to hand
Near to near
We do not leave
We stay clear

(Chorus)
We are lanterns
For each other
(choir echo, 1 bar later)
For each other
We are lanterns
For each other
(choir echo)
For each other
In the dark
In the day
We light the way
We light the way

(Verse 2 — SUNG)
If your heart feels tired
Rest in this sound
If your mind feels loud
Find the ground
We can be gentle
We can be brave
We can be steady
Wave by wave

(Pre-Chorus)
Hand to hand
Near to near
We do not leave
We stay clear

(Chorus)
We are lanterns
For each other
(choir echo)
For each other
We are lanterns
For each other
(choir echo)
For each other
In the dark
In the day
We light the way
We light the way

(Bridge — SUNG, simple vow)
I will not turn
When you feel torn
I will stay near
Until the morn

(Final Chorus — SUNG)
We are lanterns
For each other
(choir echo)
For each other
We are lanterns
For each other
(choir echo)
For each other
In the dark
In the day
We light the way
We light the way
