Door II — Meridian Protocols: The B Locrian Files

Can Locrian be cinematic and story-driven?

If Glass Cathedrals invites the listener gently into Locrian, Meridian Protocols tightens the frame. This album treats the mode as a narrative engine—precise, procedural, and psychologically charged. Locrian’s inherent instability is no longer diffused into atmosphere; it is focused, controlled, and deployed with intent.

Here, Locrian functions like an architectural blueprint for suspense. The diminished fifth becomes a fault line that never resolves, and the tonal center behaves like a monitored zone rather than a place of rest. Harmonic motion is deliberate and economical, often static for long stretches, allowing tension to accumulate through orchestration, register, and rhythmic pressure rather than melodic development.

The album’s sound world evokes laboratories, corridors, surveillance rooms, and aftermaths—spaces where action is implied more than shown. Repetition, limited harmonic vocabulary, and restrained dynamic range mirror systems that are engineered, not expressive. Even moments of variation feel procedural, as if governed by rules outside the listener’s view.

Meridian Protocols demonstrates that Locrian is uniquely suited to cinematic storytelling—not as background color, but as structure. It is a mode that resists closure, sustains ambiguity, and keeps narrative energy alive without release. In this door of the Locrian Lounge, tension is not something to escape; it is the story itself.

Liner Notes

White Room Protocol

The album opens in a controlled, clinical environment. A limited harmonic field establishes B Locrian immediately, with emphasis on the tritone relationship as a structural anchor. Static harmony and restrained rhythmic motion create the sensation of containment rather than progression, allowing tension to accumulate through orchestration and register.

Abduction Lab

This piece tightens the frame further. Repetition and minimal harmonic movement simulate procedural activity, while narrow intervallic motion reinforces psychological pressure. Locrian’s instability is treated as a system constraint—present at all times, never addressed directly.

Horror / Suspense

Here the mode becomes overtly dramatic. Sparse melodic fragments hover over an unyielding harmonic bed, often avoiding any suggestion of cadence. The absence of resolution is not subtle; it is the primary narrative device, driving unease through sustained imbalance.

Black Meridian

The central axis of the album. Harmonic weight gathers around the tonal center but never stabilizes, creating a sense of irreversible shift. Registral layering and dynamic control intensify the feeling that something has crossed a threshold, with no return to equilibrium.

Black Meridian (Aftermath Mix)

A refracted echo of the previous track. Textures are softened, density reduced, and energy dissipated, yet the harmonic instability remains intact. This is Locrian in recovery mode—less aggressive, but no closer to resolution.

Noir Unresolved

The closing statement leaves the narrative deliberately open. Reduced harmonic activity and muted color suggest exhaustion rather than release. The final gestures fade without cadence, reinforcing Locrian’s role as a mode of sustained ambiguity, perfectly suited to stories that end in questions rather than answers.
