Codex: C Phrygian — Introduction

This Codex is a focused study of a single color: C Phrygian. Built from C with degrees 1–♭2–♭3–4–5–♭6–♭7, it concentrates harmonic voltage at the ground floor—the semitone between C and D♭. By keeping the tonic and its lowered neighbor constantly in view, the Codex invites you to hear how orchestration, texture, and meter—not functional cadences—shape motion and meaning.

Every piece in this volume observes the same boundaries: C as the gravitational center, tonic pedals used liberally, and frequent i↔♭II pivots that circle rather than resolve. You will hear variants that change the emotional temperature without leaving the mode. The “Hymn (No Fifth)” removes G entirely to erase the dominant’s shadow, creating a square, processional dignity. The “Hexa Variant” pares the scale to six tones—1–♭2–♭3–4–♭6–♭7—trading harmonic reach for rhythmic clarity and dance energy. The “Ostinato Study” and “Processional” present complementary engines: one defined by left-hand mechanics, the other by breath and weight.

Formally, the set functions as a toolkit. Short cues such as the “Signal” provide liminal tension for edits and transitions; broader canvases like the “Processional” and “Dance” demonstrate how Phrygian sustains narrative flow without a leading tone. Timbres remain intentionally elemental—piano, low strings, soft brass, hand percussion, and quiet pads—so that the semitone can speak through color rather than effect.

The Codex series is meant to be collectible and comparable. Repeating the same architecture across other centers—E, F♯, and beyond—lets you hear how transposition alone changes character: C reads as stony and grounded; higher centers brighten the air; lower ones thicken the floor. Begin here, with C’s earthbound gravity, and follow the lantern line of Phrygian from study to ceremony, from threshold to dance.

Liner Notes

Pure Phrygian (C — i/♭II over C pedal)

A ground-plan of the mode: tonic pedal and the lowered second presented without commentary. Motion is achieved by pressure, not travel, letting C and D♭ define the room.

Pure Phrygian (C — i/♭II over C pedal) (Version 2)

Border Market (C Phrygian — Locrian Hexa, no fifth)

With G removed, the dominant’s horizon disappears. The six-tone palette tightens rhythm and texture; lines feel close and quick, like stalls crowding a narrow lane.

Continuum Theme (C Phrygian)

A slow-breath motif that circles the center. Orchestration swells and thins while harmony stays put, turning continuity itself into the subject.

Continuum Theme (C Phrygian) (Version 2)

C Phrygian Ostinato Study

Left-hand mechanics build a moving floor—C against D♭—for right-hand cells to trace lantern paths. A study in how small patterns accumulate gravity.

C Phrygian Hymn (No Fifth)

Block-voiced chords step forward with square dignity. Without the fifth, the cadence is all weight and witness; the procession advances by breath alone.

C Phrygian Dance (Hexa Variant)

The six-note set converts restraint into groove. Hand percussion and short nylon figures trade calls; the feet know where to go even as the harmony refuses a destination.

C Phrygian Processional (Pedal & Brass)

Low strings and soft brass carry a ceremonial arc over a steady C. The i↔♭II pivot reads as architecture—arches passing overhead, doors that never quite open.

C Phrygian Signal (Threshold Cue)

A narrow-band drone with coded pulses at D♭. Built for entrances and crossfades, it marks the line between outside and in—the moment before the room admits you.
